With Increase in seat quota at many prestigious colleges in India, proving merit for a general candidate has become a tough job. The problem has increased for the institutes as well. With selected seats to offer for a large number of students many colleges have added a successive set of selection rounds to their admission procedure. This is fast becoming a norm with all kinds of competition examinations as cluster ranking fails to give any definitive result. Multiple selection procedure, where equal emphasis is given to an all round assessment helps average and creative students to come at par with the meritorious ones and cover up their scores.
Writing Blog is one of the most widely used selection procedure. Students who are not very keen on writing find it an herculian task. They are often at loss of any substantial material to write and develop their ideas on. The thought and act of writing coming much later to them. The prejudice students have against Blog makes the task much more difficult for them. There are a few things one must keep in mind before setting onto the task of any form of writing, be it updating a journal, writing a piece of poetry or a College Admission Essay.
There is nothing called Original thinking. Alexander Pope, the most skillful couplet writer of the eighteenth century writes about good writing: It is "what oft was thought but never so well expressed". The consistent pressure of original thinking takes away a lot of creativity from good writing as we focus more on content than on expression. One must focus not on unique material but on its unique representation. The topic of a college admission essay, in whichever format, revolves around one aim: to evaluate a student in terms of skills, clarity of thought and goals and creativity. The material from which every admission aspirant will write his essay will be widely similar. You must personalize your experience to stand apart.
College Admission writing must begin with introspection. Think about your goals, How and when did you discover your interest in a particular field, what did you do to explore the possibilities available to you, How your interest grew, and how in future you see it materializing. Write down your thoughts without caring about the format, sentences. Your first step is to just have your ideas on a sheet of paper. Now, give them an outline. It should not necessarily begin at the beginning. Be creative and use techniques to make your essay interesting. Once you are through with the first draft keep it away for some days and read it once you have forgotten about it. You will now be able to read it from a fresh perspective. Share it with friends, ask for suggestions. Check for formatting and grammatical errors. You can also get them proofread by someone. It is not mandatory for a College Admission essay to be career specific, you can explore any personal experience, an anecdote, a memoir, presented in a technique that delineates your personality.
