Do’s and Don’ts

Winning College Admission Essays – Do they come from Super humans?

As a high school senior, you probably already have your eyes set on the college/s you wish to join in future for your higher studies. By the time you’re out of school, you’ve heard bits about the application process and its nightmare (as many would call it), ‘the college admission essay’. As soon as the application packs arrive, the challenge of writing an excellent and convincing essay confronts you. Harder the college/university to get into, greater is the pressure to submit a winning essay. With the competition levels only going higher up the ladder each year, the number of students equalling your study grades or scores will never come down. This is exactly when a college admission essay can do the job of giving you an edge over others. College admission essays are totally unique to you, highlighting your life, your richest life experiences and the strongest aspects of your character, all put together to present ‘you’ as someone who has some value to offer to the college.

So, how do you get it right? What makes it work? And more importantly what does not? Originality. Your essay must be original and genuine but this isn’t hard to achieve. If you want to create an original and winning essay, all you have to do, while writing, is to be your own best self. I believe that every person has at least one strong aspect to his character; all you have to do is realize what it is or has been for you in your life. More often than not, this strength is easily identifiable if you take a look at your life’s strongest moments. It can be an achievement, an emotion, or even a moment of gratification or realization which helped you grow in life. Also, remember that the purpose of the essay is to highlight your strengths as a potential student, so it is perfectly fine to boast as much about your achievements as you can.

Two most important elements that college admission essays must reflect are your energy and motivation. Write these words down and pin them on a wall if you have to, to keep reminding you of them throughout the writing process. Make your essay stand out by making it interesting. The best way to do that is to focus your essay on an actual event or create a picture of a real moment in your life. In this way, the reader can actually relate the essay to you and find it original and much more engaging. A story always keeps a reader engaged so you might as well tell one.

Now, very shortly, what college admission essays must never have are passive tones, lack of energy and unnecessary wordiness as this can make an essay lose spontaneity as well as reader’s interest. Be natural in your tone but avoid use of slangs at all costs. Writing a college admission essay neither requires you to be a superhuman, nor to lie about yourself to be successful. It is, in fact, the best practice for you to realize your best self and to present yourself as a success-driven candidate based on your real strengths.
